The President, Panel members and executive were saddened to hear that George Durbridge recently passed away.
George was the first General Counsel of the Panel from 2000 to 2007, having previously worked as General Counsel at ASIC (1990 to 2000) and as a senior lawyer at the National Companies and Securities Commission (from 1986).
George was instrumental in setting up the revitalised Panel. He had an extraordinary knowledge of the law, policy and history in relation to takeovers and corporations law generally. The Australian legal and regulatory community was a significant beneficiary of George’s knowledge and wisdom.
‘George was an extraordinary intellect but also very generous in sharing his knowledge with others’ said Allan Bulman, Panel Chief Executive.
‘From my first interaction with him as a junior lawyer in 1995, George taught me a lot about the policies underlying the Corporations Act, in particular in relation to takeovers and schemes of arrangement.’
At yesterday’s Panel Day, the Panel membership reflected on George’s considerable contribution to the Panel and ASIC.
‘We pass on our condolences to George’s family and gratefully acknowledge George’s considerable contribution to the Panel. He will be sorely missed’, said Panel President Alex Cartel.
